How to Keep Plaque from Growing on Your Retainer

Posted .

Plaque is a dangerous substance that promotes tooth decay and gum disease. Unfortunately, if you’re not careful, plaque can live and grow on your retainer, encourage dental problems, and even release a smelly odor. As you probably already guessed, it’s best to keep plaque away from your retainer as much as possible. So, to help you remove the plaque regularly, our orthodontist, Dr. Lee Mahlmann, has some tips for you.

First, rinse your retainer by putting it in a cup of white vinegar. The vinegar will loosen the plaque and make it easier to remove. Keep the retainer in the cup for about 5 minutes. When the time is up, scrub the appliance with a toothbrush. It’s probably best to use a toothbrush other than the one you use to clean your smile. The brushing will help remove the plaque. When you’re done, place toothpaste on the brush’s bristles and scrub the retainer once more. This can help eliminate the vinegar taste when you put the appliance back in your mouth. When scrubbing this last time, use non-abrasive toothpaste to keep from scratching the appliance.
