Do You Have Sore Teeth After an Orthodontic Adjustment? Here’s What to Do

Posted .

When you align your smile with braces, it’s normal to have sore teeth after orthodontic adjustments. Although this is quite inconvenient, it’s a sign that your teeth are moving, which means you’re on your way toward your perfect smile! So, to help you deal with and maybe even handle the soreness, our orthodontist, Dr. Lee Mahlmann, encourages you to do the following things:

First, rinse with warm water and take pain medication. Rinsing with warm water can relieve the discomfort because it will help the surrounding oral tissues and muscles relax. Taking pain medication, like over-the-counter drugs, can also help you relieve pain. So, please feel free to take some if you feel it is necessary.

Second, eat a soft diet. This means you should stick to eating things like yogurt, cottage cheese, and ice cream for the first day or two after your adjustment appointment. This will help you avoid making the soreness worse when you eat.

Third, use your teeth. If you treat your teeth like a sore muscle, the soreness can get better. So, please keep using your teeth and don’t let the mouth become stiff.
