Athletics and Orthodontics

Posted .

If you are involved in playing sports but will be receiving braces soon, we are happy to answer any questions to ensure you are comfortable and confident about your orthodontic gear while participating in sports. Below we answer a few FAQs about athletics and orthodontics to help you avoid damaging your orthodontic gear.

Can I still participate in sports while wearing braces?
Yes, you can do all of the same sports even during your time with braces. We are here to help patients straighten their teeth, whether they are children, teens or adults or play contact sports, bike or snowboard. Everyone can go through treatment with braces.

How do I keep my teeth safe?
When you are active, it’s important to take care of your teeth whether you wear braces or not. If you have braces, we recommend wearing an orthodontic mouth guard so that even if you are hit in the mouth by hard objects, this guard can protect your smile and braces from damage.

What is this orthodontic mouthpiece?
An orthodontic mouth guard is a small appliance that is removable and protects your mouth from elbows, knees and any objects while you are playing. It can consist of materials such as rubber, silicone and other protective options, and come in a variety of styles. We are happy to provide a mouth guard that fits your unique smile!

What can I do if I have an oral accident from sports?
If you experience an oral emergency, we encourage you to contact Drs. Mahlmann and Borders as soon as possible so that we can help you. To prevent injuries from occurring, always wear your mouth guard so that your lips and cheeks aren’t cut and you don’t break your orthodontic appliance or your teeth.
